CORE ACADEMICS
The programmes of study for mathematics are set out year-by-year for key stages 1 and 2. School is, however, required to teach the relevant programme of study by the end of the key stage. Within each key stage, school therefore have the flexibility to introduce content earlier or later than set out in the programme of study.
A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science.
As a fully bilingual school we celebrate language and the natural linguistic skills children have. We support children in learning both English and Spanish, enabling them to succeed academically and socially while maintaining and celebrating their cultural identity and home language.
Research shows that when phonics is taught in a structured way – starting with the easiest sounds and progressing through to the most complex – it is the most effective way of teaching young children to read. It is particularly helpful for children aged 5 to 7. Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully.
When teaching pupils how to write, It is essential to develops pupils’ competence in transcription and composition. In addition, pupils should be taught how to plan, revise and evaluate their writing. These aspects of writing have been incorporated into the programmes of study for composition.
The guidelines for Physical Education should equip students with the knowledge, understanding, skills and values to develop and maintain their performance in physical activities and understand the benefits to health, fitness and well-being.
